  • Louis’ Lunch is considered the birthplace of the hamburger and has been featured on the Food Network and Travel Channel specials for a good reason. If you are a burger fanatic, then there should be a strong obligation to visit this monumental staple in history. At Louis’ Lunch in New Haven, hamburgers are still cooked in antique, cast-iron grills. The burgers are positioned vertically inside the grill so that they flame-cook evenly on both sides. The potato salad is a great compliment to these juicy burgers on toasted white bread. Just don’t ask for ketchup! The moto here is simple – “This is not Burger King. You don’t get it your way. You take it my way, or you don’t get the damn thing!”

    1. Jake Louis' Lunch

Never been and I live in the state. Sad i know, but there are also so many mixed reviews. then again, they were featured on food network so I’m guessing its legit…gotta try it out for myself and see. Always packed but too small to eat inside and I’m inpatient so I usually go to five guys lol 🙂

    2. No ketchup!? Louis' Lunch

Better than five guys but I give it a 4 since in my opinion every burger needs ketchup. I don’t care how good it is. A burger without ketchup is not American. Ketchup has been used on burgers as long as I can remember. That’s my only gripe lol. Sneak ketchup packets in if you dare!

    3. Josh Louis' Lunch

Lol it is a combination of the reputation and the fact that the grills are so cool. They claim the grills are the same that were used when Louis’ first opened its doors. I never turn down a Louis’ burger.

    4. K to the G Louis' Lunch

The rep alone makes this place a 5/5. The line is usually out the door half way down the street. Always jammed! Best burger on sliced bread.

    5. Dan Louis' Lunch

Best burger in New Haven. I’ve had a very similar burger in Byram, CT which was fantastic. It was called Burgers, Shakes & Fries. Also amazing since I love fries. The shake reminded me of the ol’ skool joints that once served burgers n shakes on roller skates. I just gave away my age group huh. Lol. Louis’ is certainly a CT staple. A must try!

    6. Monique Louis' Lunch

Louis Lunch is great don’t get me wrong, but I still don’t believe in using cheese spread on a burger when a slice of real melted cheese is so much better and original. Call me old fashion, but I don’t see what all the hype is about. 4 out of 5 at best.
